Vasectomy Service

Patients living in Nottinghamshire registered with a GP can have their surgery funded on the NHS. Anyone else wishing to have a vasectomy performed by our doctors will be required to fund their operation themselves.

Musculoskeletal physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is the treatment of injury and disease by enhancing the body’s own natural healing mechanisms.

We take a holistic approach, supporting self-management of common conditions and promoting independence. We consider all aspects of the patient’s lifestyle, work and leisure and how we might be able to prevent their condition in the future.

In this way, physiotherapists teach people to help themselves to better health, so whatever your age or condition, physiotherapists are able to get you back to your best

Common treatment options we use are exercise, manual therapy, postural correction and advice. Physiotherapy may benefit conditions and and symptoms including:

  • joint and muscle symptoms
  • back and neck symptoms
  • rehabilitation after fractures or orthopaedic surgery
  • soft tissue injuries
  • whiplash
  • sports injuries

Travel Information

If you think you may require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to complete a travel risk assessment form and hand in to reception at least 6 weeks prior to departure. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

Travel Advice Leaflet for More Information

There is further information about countries and vaccinations required on the links below:

Europe Europe & RussiaNorth America North America
Central America Central Americaindia South America
egypt Carribeanlithuania Africa
bulgaria Middle Eastpoland Central Asia
china East Asiachina Australasia and Pacific

Non-urgent advice: Please Note

It is important to hand this form in as early as possible – at least 6 weeks before you travel – as 2 appointments will be required with the practice nurse, a telephone consultation and then a face to face appointment to actually receive the vaccinations and be given the relevant health advice. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your face to face appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

If you have not allowed enough time to receive the vaccine, or if we are not able to actually administer a certain vaccine, you would need to go to a private travel clinic.  The local private clinic to us is located on Regent Street in Nottingham city centre.

Safeguarding

Safeguarding is similar to the process that used to be known as Child Protection, but it also includes vulnerable adults.

In order that we provide a safe environment, Southwell Medical Centre:

  • Ensures that staff have had safeguarding training, if appropriate to their role, so that they can recognise the signs of possible abuse
  • Takes appropriate action to protect patients in the event that any member of staff exploits a vulnerable adult or child in any way.
  • Ensures that patients can raise concerns and make complaints related to abuse. The GP responsible for safeguarding vulnerable adults and Children’s safeguarding issues  is Dr Clarke . Any doctor can be contacted if you have concerns.
  • Shares relevant information with other providers, in accordance with local safeguarding procedures, when there are safeguarding concerns about a patient.
  • Complies with the Vetting and Barring Scheme
  • Has the following:
    • A safeguarding children (child protection) policy.
    • A safeguarding adults policy.
    • A patient information leaflet about abuse, containing information on what patients should do if they have suspicions that another person has been abused and what they might expect to happen under safeguarding procedures.

First Contact Physio (FCP)

We currently have appointments available in the next couple of weeks with our First Contact Physio (FCP). You can book an appointment directly with a physiotherapist via the receptionist, which means you won’t need to wait for a referral from a doctor.

You may be eligible for an appointment with a physiotherapist for the following problems:

All soft tissue injuries, sprains, strains or sports injuries

  • Arthritis – any joint
  • Possible problems with muscles, ligaments, tendons or bone, eg tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, ankle sprains
  • Spinal pain including lower back pain, mid-back pain and neck pain
  • Spinal-related pain in arms or legs, including nerve symptoms, eg pins and needles or numbness
  • Changes to walking
  • Post-orthopaedic surgery

The physiotherapist will:

  • Assess you and diagnose what’s happening
  • Give expert advice on how best to manage your condition
  • Refer you on to specialist services if necessary

Family Planning and Pre-Conception Advice

Family Planning advice and prescription is available from the GP or Clinical Pharmacists during normal consultation times. We do require patients taking the oral contraceptive pill to attend for an annual check-up.

Emergency Contraception (Morning after pill or IUD) is available through the GP or the local chemists are able to provide a limited service.

IUCD (The Coil/Implant for family planning)

The practice provides the service of IUS/IUCD fitting/implant. Patients should see Dr. Bajracharya or Dr Sheril for counselling pre-coil fit. After discussion and counselling a joint appointment with a doctor or nurse can be made. A 6 week post coil fit is recommended.

We also offer implant insertion and removal services at the surgery.

Stress and Anxiety Problems

These problems can be discussed with the doctors, practice nurses, Health Visitor or if appropriate the School nurse. They can often help you without the use of drugs.

You can also view the NHS for more guidance of ways to self-help and self refer to the services available locally, click the link below for more information.

Mental health – NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Pregnancy

We would like to know as soon as you think that you are pregnant, although a reliable pregnancy test cannot be carried out until at least six weeks after the last period.

The Midwife will see you at regular intervals throughout your pregnancy. The Ante-natal Clinics run on Monday’s and Wednesdays and can be booked through the Medical Centre’s reception. Post-natal appointments are arranged with the patient, by the Midwife.

We recommend that all women should have their immunity to rubella checked and this is something that the Midwife will discuss with you at your First Booking.

Podiatry Services (Feet)

This service offers assessment, diagnosis and treatment of foot conditions, with advice as required. Clinics are held on Tuesdays and the service is by appointment only. Patients can access Podiatry services by the completion of an application form, which is completed by a health care professional, either from the Surgery or Podiatry Clinic.

All Patients are given a standard assessment to determine the level of Podiatric need and the medical risk status. Most foot problems are treated, although some conditions may require an onward referral to a specialist clinic.

All patients can also expect to be reassessed annually to ensure any medical history is kept up to date. Social nail cutting is not undertaken by this service. If there are basic nail requirements and no medical risk factors, relatives and carers are expected to help with basic nail care.
